As part of their online initiative to allow experts to discuss a variety of topics, Europa Press in collaboration with GSK organized last October a virtual meeting called “AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria in times of COVID-19”. Along with other relevant voices, Juan José Vaquero, from Universidad Carlos III de Madrid and coordinator of the IMI ERA4TB Project, introduced the objectives and main achievements of the project. Regarding the general situation of research on infectious diseases, he warned about the dangers caused by the restrictions derivating from the current pandemic, where multiple programs and studies have stopped.

The main concern now is to reverse the increase in infections and mortality and return them to the levels of previous years. The general consensus of the experts is that all these resources destined to infectious disease research must remain intact and even increase if we are to fulfill the agenda of the UN Sustainable Development Goals 2030.
